Installation of the chi rho mosaic in the baptistery has been completed! The mosaicist, Matteo Randi, who created the design and shaped the stone also came to the construction site to perfom the installation himself. Randi is from Ravenna, Italy, one of the world's foremost centers for mosaic art and he began learning the craft at age 9. You can read a profile of the artist here.
Wisdom commissioned this piece through Rugo Stone, a company which has produced works for the likes of The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the National Air and Space Museum, the Dominican House of Studies, and many more as seen here.
Mosaic art has a historic place in church design because stonework is less vulnerable to degradation than other forms of art, and the use of natural materials pays homage to the creator of those materials. We look forward to many future baptisms in our new home!
